Guidelines for checking SRTEs

While checking the SRTE forms for processing, please be sure that the following areas are coded correctly.

  • Course Number (all three fields must be coded in)
  • Suffix (code only if used, blank if not used)
  • Section Number (all three fields must be coded in)
  • Semester (code in one semester)
  • Special (this area is used for Multiple Instructor listings. Each instructor is assigned a letter. Code the appropriate letter)
  • Please do not change or alter any responses in the question area.

Common errors you should look for:

  • Miscoded errors
  • Incomplete erasures (the scanner reads these as filled in)
  • Course and section numbers reversed
  • Section written 001 but coded 000
  • Section written 001 but coded 1
  • Section number missing
  • Wrong semester
  • Incorrect use of suffix verses special (some sheets filled in but others are not)
  • Ink - only use #2 pencil
Types of errors that cannot be corrected by the
Schreyer Institute for Teaching Excellence
  • Use of incorrect sheets will cause errors on your printout (Example: Math course submitted but some sheets are for Music course). We cannot combine these because they have different questions.
  • Sheets from different colleges or campuses submitted together. (Example: An instructor who teaches NURS at UNIVERSITY PARK and also at ALTOONA can’t take sheets from Human Development at UNIVERSITY PARK and turn them in at ALTOONA. You have to get your sheets for ALTOONA from ALTOONA)
  • Unsorted sheets from different sections of the same course submitted together. If the section number is missing from a sheet, we cannot determine which section it belongs to. That sheet would have to be returned to the submitter. To avoid this problem, please sort or code in all sheets.

Helpful Tips to reduce Coding Errors before they happen

The single best approach is to make sure the students receive proper instructions and follow them.

Remind students to:
  • Complete the Course Number and code in all three fields
  • Complete the Section Number and code in all three fields
  • Complete the suffix if there is one to the course they are filling out

Not all stray marks on sheets present problems. As a rule, do not spend a lot of time looking for stray marks. Only incomplete erasures and those marks that appear across the unused bubbles, such as suffix, are problematic.
